170 years ago yesterday, Brigham Young leading a group of Mormon Settlers fleeing persecution stopped here at what is now called “This is the place” state park. So called because upon seeing the valley Brigham Young said “It is enough. This is the right place. Drive on.” Looking back on it...solid choice and solid advice.
Thanks for your hard work Pioneers! The place looks great!
Post cars you would use to drive from Illinois to Utah.

Police cars make good road trip cars
When they aren’t all taken apart...
I was in the southern part of Utah in may, and it was amazing

I’ll go for the new Handcart RSR. It’s the stripped-down homologation version for the FIA Formula HC racing class.
Two-point harness, forged balsam wheels, lightweight cypress fiber tub.

The only acceptable choice for a Mormon roadtrip:
This is meant to be a good-natured joke. I grew up with lots of Mormon friends, and actually had more kids in my family than any of them.

Then, as other pioneers came out west, the Mormons sold them goods at inflated prices. The pioneers bought them, and as they moved on towards Oregon the Mormon raiders would swoop in, kill them and take back the goods they had previously sold them.
And they call that capitalism.

The temp wasn’t too bad, what was strange was that it rained it every state we went to between Indiana and California

Meh, I knew 2 families (including my sister in law) that grew up needing an express van to get the family around. I grew up with suburbans all my life.

I have some friends who are Orthodox Jews and some of their families are too big for even a conversion van!

I had this great picture of a white express van with those “family” stickers on the back that went on forever...but I can’t find it.

And every year, we celebrate by lighting enough fireworks to burn Antelope Island and at least a few houses in Tooele.

Is that what happened to Antelope Island? I saw the smoke but didn’t check into the details.

I’ve heard this accusation before as well - but that kind of extortion was basically the rule along all the routes of western expansion, it wasn’t specific to Utah, or the Mormons. By far, the worst artificial price inflation was in Missouri where the vast majority of Manifest Destiny pioneers started their treks, a state that the Mormons were driven out of in the 1830s. Far more pioneers were robbed in Kansas than in Utah .
I think what you’re describing is 19th century capitalism, not Mormon capitalism.

Unless you have money to spend on something tackier, like an Escalade or a lifted Excursion can’t even fit in your garage.

Is this another ‘fleeing persecution’ when it’s really ‘fleeing for the right to persecute’ (ala pilgrims), or ‘fleeing persecution’ because they wouldn’t obey the law of the land (only having one wife) or ‘fleeing persecution’ because they were actually persecuted?
My sister and step-father are Mormons, though not very good ones. My step-father smokes (now vapes) and drinks lots of coffee and known to drink some of my beer, cider, etc...

No, it was pretty much persecution. if you read up on it a little the primary motivators were basically everywhere they went they brought a strong economic and political sway with them with ideas that were unfavorable at the time. Yes, they were also considered strange for their practices (including plural marriage) and yes some members fought back against persecutions which all added to the “mormon scourge” vibe.

I read up on some of the Mormon history primarily as it was doing my head in with people confusing information they heard with fact of how you have to giv 10% of your wages to th church an have multiple wives. Many confuse The Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints with the break away ‘The Real Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints’.
I never had any issues with Mormon missionaries and me being an atheist, except one from Northern Ireland. He kept badgering me why I didn’t believe in religion. I said I believe in science and mankind’s evolution from the big bang, etc... it kept on till I said in a raised tone that stopped everyone in the room talking ‘I don’t believe in religion, I believe in science now back off’. That was a fun day. Lol.

Oh man...THOSE missionaries. They were the worst to go out proselyting with. “I know, I’ll fight with them! That’ll show them what a gospel of love and inclusion is all about!”

Most were really nice. I can remember two Elders from Utah, they got some time off so they camped out in the living room with my step-father aand watched every episode of Star Trek we had only pausing for toilet breaks and stopping for sleep. Every morning leaving for school they’d be sat there glued to the TV screen then when I came home, still there, still glued to the TV screen.
